Sören Meschede

The young German photographer Sören Meschede was born 1976 in Stuttgart. 18 years ago, his father introduced the 12 year-old schoolboy to the world of emulsions and images, and this world never lost his grip on him. He maintained this avid interest in photography, which provided a creative outlet during his studies of philosophy and law in Göttingen (Germany), Córdoba (Spain) and Berlin (Germany). In his student years he worked for magazines and studios and organised several photo exhibitions in Stuttgart (Germany) and Córdoba (Spain).

Since Mai 2004, Sören is living in Spain, mostly contributing feature-stories to Spanish and German newspapers, but in his new exhibition he shows us the more experimental branch of his work. Ever since interested in the movements and shifting of time, he tries to express in his images a new way of not only capturing an instant but the whole of a situation.

Classical photography tries to catch the decisive moment of a situation in the split of a second. This is the camera’s inherent way of expression. But, in viewing an entire situation, don’t you have to question: Is there really any split of second, which could be truly considered the decisive one?

The classical photographer usually tries to satisfy this question implementing his own perspective of the “essential moment”. However, with his portraits, Sören Meschede attempts to illustrate emotion in a more coherent manner than classical photography is able to do. Using an ordinary scanner, he records the entire situation, implementing the whole broad band of instants. This method of scanning differs from the norm of taking individual photos with a camera since the ray of light in a scanner slowly passes and captures millions of images to finally compose a unique tableau of the situation on one sheet of paper. These scanner-photographs might have no clear optic, thus are able to expose for example the whole variety of a person’s feeling. So the images reveal hidden sensations to the spectator, that would have been hidden, capturing only the “decisive moment”
